Notice the use of the word holiness. Holiness is Christ-likeness. Holiness is an essential quality of a people seeking to BE THE CHURCH because holiness is necessary to relate to God, it is the aim of our transformation and it is how we show the beauty of Christ to the world. 1 Peter 1:16 says: "Be holy because I am holy."
We learned that holiness is both a gift that is granted and a change that gained. It is granted in a moment and gained over time. When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ his death on the cross becomes the all sufficient payment for our sin. In that moment God grants forgiveness and henceforth sees us as holy. God sees us through the righteousness of his son and has the same opinion of us as he has of Jesus! That is amazing grace!!!
But in the day-to-day here on planet earth life is still marked by sinfulness. Because of the gift of God's amazing grace and our love for him, the Christ-follower wants to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus. Our motivation for gaining more and more holiness is not to gain God's favor. We already have that because we have been forgiven! Instead our motivation to be holy in the day-to-day is our love for God and awe that he granted us the holiness of his Son.
We seek the holiness of God every day because we want to love God well, we want to become like Jesus and we want to show off the beauty of our Savior in this broken world. This is why scripture says: "If you love me you will keep my commands." Love motivates a pursuit of holiness.
Questions to consider:
- Do you know and love God?
- Are you trying to gain God's favor or are you living in his forgiveness?
- Are you pursuing holy Christ-likeness each day because you love God?
