The world Jesus was born into was not unlike our own. There were Jews and gentiles, religious and secular, slave and free, poor and powerful. It was a time of Roman oppression and social injustice. Many people living during that day felt hopeless, marginalized and powerless to see things change.
In the middle of it all a young man named Joseph and his very pregnant teenage bride, Mary, traveled to Bethlehem at the order of a King to be counted for a census. When they arrived there was nowhere for them to stay except a stable for the animals. So in that place, in the stillness of a starry night, a very special baby was born. This Baby was Jesus, the son of God, Emmanuel... God with us.
The birth of Jesus is not just another Bible story... this was the beginning of the main story. This was God's answer to all of the problems in his broken creation. Everything good and all hope was bound up in this tiny child. All injustice, oppression, poverty, slavery and suffering in the world would find healing and hope in this new baby.
This baby was the key to God's unfolding plan to establish for himself a people... a church, who would declare and display his Glory to the ends of the earth. A unique people who would live as the hands and feet of their savior, bringing hope to a broken and divided world.
