I saw this video floating around on social media today. Its an Under Armour commercial featuring Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps. The message here is not intended to be an overtly christian message. But it reflects a Christian worldview and speaks to a serious deficiency among Christian men. Please watch:
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run (or swimmers swim), but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified."
Guys, I'm going to say something strong here. Its time for Christian men in our church.. and every other church for that matter.. to man up, to grow up and to glorify God as the leaders of our own lives, of our families, of our church and of the Christian mission. The next step beyond surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ is to pursue CHRIST RULE over every part of our lives.
It's time to train for the only race that truly matters.
Christian man training happens in the Word, in prayer, in Christian community among other men and in an ever deepening commitment & submission to the church. Every one of these things happen in the dark... So that we might become the light.
So we might be the men, husbands, fathers, church leaders and Christian missionaries and disciple makers that God uses for his Glory.
Brother, lay down the inconsequential endeavors, the habits and hobbies and temporary pleasures and give yourself to those things that last.. those things that actually matter.
Man Up, Grow Up and Glorify God.
May we be able to say:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
And may HE say to us:
"Well done, my good servant!" Luke 19:17
